Every year on June 8, the United Nations leads a global celebration of our planet’s life force – the ocean. It’s not just a symbolic day. It’s a reminder of how deeply connected we are to the sea: it shapes our weather, provides food and livelihoods, and harbors the richest biodiversity on Earth. This year, the World Ocean Day theme is a call to reflect and act: “WONDER: Sustaining What Sustains Us.”
At Ocean Earth Travels, we see this theme as a meaningful opportunity to connect travel with purpose.

What Does “Sustaining What Sustains Us” Mean?
The 2025 World Ocean Day theme – “WONDER: Sustaining What Sustains Us” – is a powerful invitation to look at the ocean with fresh eyes. Not just with admiration, but with awareness. The ocean is not a distant landscape. It is the system that supports all life on Earth: generating over half the oxygen we breathe, regulating our climate, and feeding entire nations.
But today, that system is in danger. Climate change is heating our seas. Plastic waste chokes marine animals. Coral reefs are bleaching and dying at unprecedented rates. In the face of this, the theme calls us to reconnect with what’s at stake – and to protect what has always protected us.
Wonder isn’t passive. It can be the beginning of action. By choosing to travel consciously, support marine conservation, and take part in experiences that restore rather than extract, we move from admiration to responsibility. “Sustaining what sustains us” means making choices that keep the ocean alive – not just for beauty’s sake, but for our collective future.
This year, World Ocean Day challenges us not only to care – but to contribute.
Coral Reefs: A Global Lifeline
Coral reefs are often called the rainforests of the sea – not because it sounds poetic, but because it’s true. These reefs support roughly 25% of all marine life despite occupying just a sliver of the ocean floor. That’s not just fish and turtles – it’s food webs, livelihoods, coastlines, and even climate regulation.
But here’s the reality: reefs are in trouble. Climate change is heating the water. Pollution and careless tourism weaken the corals. And bleaching events are wiping out entire sections of reef faster than they can recover.
Indonesia, sitting in the heart of the Coral Triangle, is home to the richest reef biodiversity on the planet. If reefs have a stronghold left, it’s here – and that means the responsibility to protect them is here too.

This is where places like Amed come in. Local coral nurseries are showing that recovery is possible, but they need consistent care and attention. That’s not the job of scientists alone. It’s something regular travelers can be part of – simply by showing up, learning, and lending a hand.
Reef restoration isn’t glamorous. It’s algae-scrubbing, fragment-planting, and working with nature’s pace. But it’s real. And it’s working.
Coral Farming in Amed: A Hands-On Way to Help
On Bali’s northeast coast, the village of Amed is leading the way in hands-on marine restoration. Ocean Earth Travels, in partnership with Calypso Diving Bali, and referencing coral education resources from Ocean Gardener, offers a Coral Farming Course that allows travelers to contribute directly to reef recovery – not by watching from the sidelines, but by getting involved.

Whether you’re snorkeling or diving, the course is designed to meet you where you are:
- Coral Farming & Snorkeling – great for beginners and non-divers
- Coral Farming & Diving – ideal for certified divers
Led by experienced instructors, each session starts with an introduction to coral reef ecology and the threats corals face, like warming seas and pollution. Then comes the hands-on part: visiting a live coral nursery, helping clean coral structures, attaching coral fragments, and seeing how recovery happens up close.
You’ll learn how to identify coral types, understand how they reproduce, and see how coral nurseries help rehabilitate damaged reef zones. These are not simulations – this is real restoration, and your involvement supports the work being done year-round in Amed.
Coral Farming & Snorkeling
Great for snorkelers and freedivers. This half-day activity includes coral ID, planting coral fragments on coral spiders, and guided snorkeling over nursery sites in Lipah Bay.
Discover Coral Diver
A half-day diving activity designed for certified divers. Learn the basics of coral biology, growth forms, and restoration. Includes 1 dive.
Ocean Gardener Course
A three-day program including five dives. Dive deeper into coral ID, reproduction, and farming techniques. Includes certification.

Why World Oceans Day Is the Perfect Moment
World Ocean Day isn’t just a time to celebrate the beauty of the sea – it’s a global call to rethink how we engage with it. This year’s theme, “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us,” challenges us to go beyond admiring the ocean and start actively protecting it.

At Ocean Earth Travels, we believe travel should be part of that shift. By joining a coral farming session in Amed, travelers aren’t just signing up for a day in the water – they’re stepping into a deeper relationship with the ocean. It’s a moment to learn, contribute, and walk away knowing your presence left a reef slightly better than you found it.
That’s what makes this course more than just an activity. It’s a way to connect purpose to experience, and wonder to action – right when the world is paying attention.
Join the Movement: Be Part of the Ocean’s Story
The ocean has given us so many gifts – adventure, inspiration, peace, and life itself. World Ocean Day 2025 is a chance to give back, to ensure those gifts last for generations. The theme “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us” is ultimately a hopeful one. It says that our sense of wonder can be the beginning of something powerful. When we fall in love with the ocean, we naturally want to protect it. And when we take action to protect it, we become part of something bigger than ourselves.

Celebrate World Ocean Day by living its message. Let your wonder for the ocean lead you to new experiences and actions. Come learn, get your hands wet, meet like-minded ocean lovers, and see a side of Bali most tourists miss – the side where people are coming together to restore and sustain the very wonder that sustains us all. It’s an adventure with heart and purpose, and we’d love for you to be a part of it. Visit the World Ocean Day official event calendar to explore more global activities and join the movement wherever you are.
Ready to dive in? Celebrate World Ocean Day by being part of the solution – one coral, one traveler, one action at a time.
