Itinerary

  • Day 1:
    • After a short transfer in the morning to the harbour from Sorong Airport or your hotel, you will be welcome onboard the KLM Mari liveaboard. A boat and tour briefing will follow, then you will set up your scuba gear and check in to your cabin. Lunch, dinner and snacks such as fruit, candy bars or ice-cream will be served as Mari cruises out to the Sagewin Strait towards Batanta, where a first test-dive around Pulau Ayemi will take place. Variety and fresh produce are the basis of our menu, and a fusion of Asian and International cuisine, as well local specialities are served in the outside dining area.
  • Day 2-12:
    • Our cruise takes you first to the Dampier Strait, then heading North to West Waigeo and Aljui Bay, to loop around and head back south to Mansuar Island and the Dampier Strait. You will make 3-4 dives per day (except only 2 dives on the final full day) at some of the best dive spots in Raja Ampat Central / North, an area considered to be at the heart of the world’s coral reef biodiversity. Dive sites include “Edi’s Black Forest“ (famous for its black coral forests), “Red Patch Wall” (a gigantic red stained limestone wall). Or “Melissa’s Garden” with its breath- taking coral reef garden. At “Cape Kri”, holding the world record for the greatest number of species recorded on a single dive, you will encounter schools of barracuda, trevally, manta rays, fusiliers, surgeonfish, wobbegongs, epaulette and reef sharks, as well as magnificent macro critters such as electric clams, tiny shrimps, crabs, a colourful array of nudibranchs, ghost pipefish, blue ringed octopus, and bobtail squid.
    • Mornings begin bright and early with a light pre-dive breakfast followed by a first morning dive. After a full breakfast, a second morning dive usually takes place. Then it’s back onboard for lunch and some relaxation time in your cabin, the social areas or sun decks. A 3rd dive takes place in the afternoon, followed by snacks, a night dive, and then dinner. End the day with a chilled beer, a glass of wine or gin cocktail from the bar. At other sites like “Sardine Reef” you can hear “fish thunder” (booming sounds resulting from the fast movement of the fish), enjoy the magically colourful congregation of great schools of fish (like Spanish Mackerel, Barracuda or Bommies, …) at “Blue Magic” or bask in the sight of large Manta Rays at “Manta Sandy” or “Manta Ridge”.
  • Day 12:
    • Prepare to leave the boat between 5-11 am, after a continental breakfast (or possibly lunch, depending on your post-cruise schedule). Say good-bye to your fellow guests and wish the boat crew farewell, before a complimentary transfer will take you to either Sorong Airport or your hotel.

Note: All schedules are subject to changes according to weather, sea, diving, & local conditions.

About The MARI

The MARI liveaboard is a beautiful traditional Indonesian phinisi that offers year-round diving trips in Raja Ampat and the Banda Sea. The concept is to keep a small number of guests relative to its size to provide more space and comfort for everyone on board.

Discover the MARI Liveaboard

MARI was built by traditional boat builders in South Sulawesi. They made it for their own diving expeditions in Indonesian waters, from Sumatra to Papua. To ensure her durability and strength in the water, the builders used ironwood. In 2016, the 30m vessel underwent a complete refurbishment to provide modern furnishings and ample onboard space.

Moreover, the Liveaboard offers a lot of space and comfort. It can accommodate up to 14 guests, making it suitable for non-divers and families as well. MARI has 7 cabins, including 3 deluxe and 4 superior options. They all feature individually controlled AC, storage space, and private bathrooms. Situated on the main deck, the bright and well-ventilated cabins provide cozy accommodations for the guests.

In addition, MARI liveaboard offers several common areas. You will find an open-air lounge and bar, as well as 2 sun decks with loungers. Recently, the addition of a highly-trained chef onboard ensures that divers can enjoy a wide variety of fresh, healthy, and delicious cuisine. Furthermore, the al-fresco dining table provides the perfect place to enjoy a hearty meal while surrounded by stunning scenery.

Diving Experience

MARI has new and reliable technical equipment, a seasoned captain and crew, 3 experienced dive masters, and an English-speaking cruise director to ensure a safe and enjoyable diving experience for divers of all levels

Moreover, the liveaboard explores the best of Indonesia’s dive sites, moving around Raja Ampat and the Banda Sea. This allows divers to explore one of the most diverse marine environments in the world. The MARI’s spacious dive deck, gear storage, individual rinse tanks, large dive tender, and the recent addition of Nitrox ensure a comfortable and convenient dive liveaboard experience.
