Lumba Lumba Dive Resort

Lumba Lumba Dive Resort

Lumba Lumba Dive Resort sits on Gapang Beach, on the northwestern tip of Pulau Weh, the volcanic island off the top of Sumatra. White sand, big overhanging trees, a small village, and a house reef that starts a few fin kicks from the dive shop. This is one of Indonesia’s quieter corners, and the resort has been built around the diving since 1998.

The resort

The cottages were purpose-built for divers who want somewhere comfortable to come back to after a day in the water. Each one sits in the garden with a balcony and sun loungers, an attached bathroom, air conditioning, and mosquito netting. They are spacious, kept clean, and close enough to the beach that you fall asleep to the sound of it.

Six beachfront cottages with 12 units (448 sq ft / 42 m² each) situated in the garden with direct beach access.

Standard Unit

Living area with choice of king or twin beds, wall fan, desk, en-suite bathroom with hot shower and western toilet (some units with bath), small kitchenette with kettle and fridge, large wooden veranda with bench and hammock. Most units have seaview. AC units available. All units include a silent backup generator for power outages.

Family Cottage

Two adjoining units with a shared veranda for group gatherings, while maintaining separate beds and bathrooms. Each unit has the same amenities as the standard rooms. Extra spring beds or floor mattresses can be added for additional guests.

There is a restaurant at the resort, and a handful of local warungs sit right on the beach path within a minute’s walk. Laundry, massage, and scooter rental round out the practical side, so you can explore the island on your surface days. The feel of the place is relaxed and family-run, the kind of resort where the staff remember your name by the second morning.

The diving

Lumba Lumba is a PADI 5-Star Dive Resort and has been running year-round since 1998, which shows in how the diving is organised. Groups are kept small and matched to experience, and the team teaches the full PADI ladder from Discover Scuba through to Divemaster, in several languages. DAN accident insurance is available on site.

The water here is clear. Visibility averages over 20 metres and often passes 30, and on deeper dives during upwelling it can open up beyond 40. Temperatures sit around 28 to 29 degrees. The house reef, Batee Dua Gapang, runs straight out in front of the dive shop with resident turtles, and it works equally well for an easy shore dive or a snorkel. Beyond it, daily boat dives and two-tank day trips reach the sites that made Pulau Weh’s name, including the Sophie Rickmers wreck and the volcanic underwater hot springs the island is known for. Nitrox and 15-litre tanks are available, and the centre caters to technical and deep diving as well.

The marine life covers both ends of the spectrum. Big stuff passes through, manta rays, swirling schools of fish, turtles on most dives, while the reefs and slopes hold the macro that keeps photographers happy: ghost pipefish, frogfish, seahorses, mantis shrimp, flatworms, and moray eels. It suits divers chasing current and adrenaline as much as those who want long, slow macro dives in the shallows.

Three boat dives daily for certified divers are organised daily. The resort’s speedboats have dual engines, roof, ladder, and safety equipment, allowing the team to reach different sites based on conditions and guest interests. Main dives are 5 to 20 minutes away; distant sites like the Canyon are also accessible.

House reef dives are available at dawn, noon, late afternoon, and night. The house reef is well-suited for macro and night diving.

Friday schedule: Local fishing tradition restricts boating and diving Friday mornings. Two afternoon dives run instead.

Snorkeling

The house reef has growing corals, colorful fish, and occasional turtles in shallow areas. Gapang Bay is sheltered with minimal current.
Snorkelers can join dive boats to outer sites if space allows. Confirm the day before based on weather and sea conditions; some sites work for snorkeling while others drop too deep to see the reef clearly.

Dolphin Spotting & Extended Snorkeling

Early morning dolphin spotting: 6:30 AM start, return around 8:15 AM. Guests can then join the morning dive program or pursue other activities. Dedicated snorkeling trips run on smaller boats, including half-day options. A snorkel guide is available to add to any trip. Combined dolphin spotting and snorkeling trips are also offered.

Location and access

Pulau Weh is the westernmost island of Indonesia, a volcanic island reached from Banda Aceh. From the city you take the fast ferry across to the island, then a short transfer over to Gapang Beach on the quieter west side. It takes a little effort to get to, which is exactly why the reefs are in the shape they are in and why the beach is not crowded. For divers who want world-class diving without the traffic, that trade is the whole point.
