Itinerary

Five days out of Labuan Bajo, working north through Komodo National Park and back. Around 15 dives, three of them at night, plus the Komodo dragon trek on day four.

Day 1: Labuan Bajo, Sebayur Kecil, Siaba Besar (2 dives)

Board in the morning and sail out. The check dive is at Sebayur Kecil, an easy reef to get your weighting right on. Late afternoon at Siaba Besar, which everyone calls Turtle Town: turtles, cuttlefish, octopus, reef sharks and hard coral in good shape.

Day 2: Batu Bolong, Police Corner, Manta Point, night dive (4 dives)

Batu Bolong first, a pinnacle with coral over every inch of it and current on both sides. Police Corner is a shallow drift through overhangs, caves and crevices. Manta Point in the afternoon for the cleaning stations. The day closes with a night dive back at Siaba Besar.

Day 3: Golden Passage, Deadman’s Reef, The Lighthouse, night dive (4 dives)

A drift at first light through the Golden Passage, finishing in a shallow coral garden. Then Deadman’s Reef or another northern site, where the nutrient-rich water brings macro life alongside the bigger topography. The Lighthouse in the afternoon has the table and whip corals the north is known for. Night dive site chosen on the day, based on conditions.

Day 4: Komodo dragon trek, Bonsai, Pengah, night dive at Wainilu (3 dives)

An early trek on Komodo Island, timed to be there before the day boats arrive. Back on board for Bonsai, which has overhangs, swim-throughs, coral gardens and sharks resting on the sand. Pengah or a nearby site in the afternoon. Wainilu after dark is a muck dive: frogfish, nudibranchs and whatever else the guides turn up.

Day 5: last dives, back to Labuan Bajo (2 dives)

Two more dives in the morning, then a slow run back. Disembarkation is around 3pm.

Sites move with weather, tide and current. Your guides decide the running order on the day, and a Komodo itinerary that never changed would be a suspicious one. Book your flight home for the day after disembarkation, not the same afternoon: you need 18 hours between your last dive and takeoff.

The boat

Blue Lotus is a 34-metre wooden phinisi, 98 gross tonnes, with five cabins for twelve guests. Indoor and open-air dining, a lounge and an observation deck. Small enough that the group stays a group, which on a four-night trip matters more than square metres.

Getting to Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo (LBJ) has several flights a day from Bali, about 90 minutes in the air, and connections through Jakarta. Boarding is between 9am and midday on 5 September, so arriving the evening before is the safe plan. Transfers from your hotel or the airport are included. If you want a hand with flights or a night either side, tell us and we will sort it.
