7 Days Tour in South Sulawesi | Toraja – Lake Tempe – Rammang Rammang

A 7-day trip through South Sulawesi, taking in the Toraja region and Lake Tempe. Culture and landscape in roughly equal measure.

The trip starts in Makassar, with the drive north through Bugis villages and into the mountains. In Toraja you visit the burial sites and the villages, and hike through rice terraces and coffee plantations.

Then Lake Tempe, with its floating houses and the community living along the river. Before returning to Makassar, Rammang Rammang, with a boat ride through the karst and a look at the caves.

Itinerary

Day 1: Makassar – Rantepao

A guide meets you at Makassar Airport. The drive to Toraja takes 9 hours, through Bugis country with its traditional houses, fish ponds and mountains. Lunch at a local restaurant in Pare Pare, then a stop at Bamba Puang Valley. You reach Rantepao in the early evening.

Day 2: Explore Toraja

A day around Toraja: the cliffside stone graves at Lemo, the baby grave in a tree at Pote, and the royal tombs at Suaya. Lunch at a local restaurant, then the traditional villages of Tumbangdatu, Karuaya and Kete. Evening free.

Note: If a funeral ceremony is taking place, it is possible to include it in the program

Day 3: Market and Nature Tour

After breakfast, the buffalo and pig market at Bolu, then the megaliths at Bori and the traditional village of Palawa. The drive up passes rice terraces and coffee plantations, with lunch at a restaurant at 1350 m. A walk through the village and the fields before heading back to the hotel.

Day 4: Hiking Adventure

A morning hike through the mountains, past villages and coffee plantations. A car picks you up for lunch at a local restaurant, then more walking, with karst rock formations along the way. Evening free at the hotel.

Day 5: Journey to Sengkang

After breakfast, check out and head to Sengkang to explore the scenic beauty of Lake Tempe. Navigate around the floating houses and observe fishing activities and local birdlife. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant before returning to your hotel for a relaxing evening.

Day 6: Rammang Rammang – Makassar

After breakfast, depart for Makassar with a stop in Soppeng to see the impressive bats roosting high in the trees. Continue to Rammang Rammang for a boat ride along the Pute River to Berua village. If time permits, visit the enchanting firefly cave and explore the karst rock park. Enjoy lunch at Ecolodge Restaurant before heading to Makassar and checking into your hotel.

Day 7: Departure

Transfer to Sultan Hasanuddin Airport for your onward journey. End of the tour.
