The diving

Komodo does everything. Pelagic dives in current with sharks, gentle drifts, walls and drop-offs, seamounts and pinnacles, and macro when you want it. The north has the hard coral and the anthias clouds; the south is soft coral, colder water and more critters. Manta rays feed at Karang Makassar and are seen most of the year, though nobody can promise a wild animal on a given week.

Then three days most boats skip: Banta, Sangeang with its black volcanic sand and gas bubbling through it, and Moyo. Seamounts, walls, pinnacles and coral gardens with almost nobody else in the water. The Gilis close the trip with easy dives, a wreck, turtles and reef sharks. Ashore there is the ranger walk to the dragons and the climbs up Padar and to Pink Beach.

Conditions

Water is 28 C in the north of Komodo and around 22 C in the south, which in July and August can drop to 23 C. That is a 5mm and a hood if you feel the cold, not a shortie. Komodo has consistent current and a reef hook earns its place. Three overnight crossings on this route; otherwise the boat moves between dives or early in the morning.
