Scuba Diving Liveaboard in The Banda Sea

Scuba Diving Liveaboard in The Banda Sea

The Banda Sea was once the Spice Islands, the world’s only source of nutmeg and cloves, which is what drew traders here for centuries. Today it draws experienced divers instead, for its deep seamounts, its reefs, and its schooling hammerheads.

The region is remote enough that a liveaboard is the only practical way to dive it.

Best Season for Diving Liveaboards in The Banda Sea

The diving season runs March to April and September to November. The seas are calmer then, which lets liveaboards cover the main sites, including the Banda Islands, Alor, and the Forgotten Islands.

Water Temperature: 27 to 30°C (81 to 86°F)
Visibility: 15 to 40 meters (50 to 130 feet)

For experienced divers seeking encounters with schooling hammerheads, September to November are particularly special as these apex predators aggregate in the deep waters of the Banda Sea.

Who is it for?

If you’re an experienced diver looking for a mix of adventure and untouched beauty, the Banda Sea should be on your list. This remote region is all about dramatic drop-offs, strong currents, and encounters with pelagic giants like hammerhead sharks. It’s perfect for those who love thrilling drift dives and exploring underwater seamounts covered in life.

Sites like the walls at Banda Neira and the volcanic slopes at Manuk suit divers with an Advanced Open Water certification who are comfortable in current. If you are not there yet, some liveaboards run shallower dives and provide extra guidance.

Main Areas & Dive Sites in The Banda Sea

The Banda Sea holds some of the most biodiverse dive sites anywhere: sheer walls, volcanic seascapes, and rare pelagic species. The main areas:

Pulau Hatta

The drop-offs here fall away into deep water, which makes it a favorite for wall diving. The walls carry coral gardens, sponges and sea fans. You drift with the current past schools of jackfish, fusiliers and barracuda, with reef sharks patrolling below. For macro, there are pygmy seahorses and nudibranchs in the coral.

Fun fact: Pulau Hatta is named after Indonesia’s first vice president, Mohammad Hatta, and is rich in both underwater and cultural history.

Banda Neira

Banda Neira combines history with the diving. Below the surface, coral grows over old lava flows from the island’s eruptions, so you dive reef and volcanic rock together. During the hammerhead migration, usually September to November, this is the place to see them. Visibility can reach 40 meters.

Manuk Island (Snake Island)

Manuk is often called Snake Island. It holds thousands of banded sea kraits, striped sea snakes that move through the water alongside you. They look alarming and are harmless. The nutrient-rich water around Manuk also brings in tuna, barracuda, and sometimes hammerheads or dolphins. The island itself is still volcanically active.

Lucipara and Penyu Islands

These remote atolls see almost no traffic. Lucipara is known for its biodiversity: reef sharks, turtles, and large schools of surgeonfish and trevally. The isolation is why the reefs are in the state they are. Manta rays and whale sharks pass through.

Gunung Api

Gunung Api is an active volcano. Underwater, the coral has built itself onto volcanic rock, which makes for good photography. It is also known for sea snakes: divers regularly see dozens on a single dive. The volcanic nutrients in the water are what drive the coral growth.

What to Expect in the Banda Sea

  • Strong Currents: This area is known for its challenging conditions, with strong currents making it ideal for experienced divers seeking adventure.
  • Big Marine Life: The Banda Sea is home to hammerhead sharks, reef sharks, sea turtles, and even whale sharks during the right seasons.
  • Clear Water: visibility often exceeds 30 to 40 meters.
  • Seasonal Highlights: The best time to dive here is between September and November, during the hammerhead migration.
