Getting There

To reach Jiwa Jawa Resort Ijen, start by flying into Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar or Juanda International Airport in Surabaya. From either airport, you can take a domestic flight to Banyuwangi, the nearest major city to Mount Ijen.

From Banyuwangi, it’s a scenic drive to the resort. You can hire a private car or arrange a transfer through the resort. The drive takes 2 to 3 hours through farmland and villages.

Hiking at Mount Ijen

Hiking and trekking in Mount Ijen is an adventure that takes you into the heart of one of Indonesia’s most extraordinary volcanic landscapes. The trek typically begins in the early hours of the morning, covering a 3-kilometer trail that ascends steeply to the crater rim. As you make your way up, the air cools down, often dropping below 10°C (50°F), so warm clothing is recommended. The climb takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, and at the top you get the blue flames of burning sulfuric gas at the crater. At dawn, the view transforms as the turquoise acid lake becomes visible, set against the rugged volcanic landscape. The best time to experience this remarkable trek is during the dry season, from April to October, when the weather is clear and the trails are safer.
