Raja Ampat Biodiversity Nature Resort

Raja Ampat Biodiversity Nature Resort

Raja Ampat Biodiversity Nature Resort is a small dive resort on a white-sand beach on south Waigeo, in the Dampier Strait of Raja Ampat. It has 13 cottages and takes no more than 26 guests. Many of the best dive sites in the strait are a few minutes away by boat.

Few resorts in Raja Ampat are built on a real, walkable beach. This one is, with the sea in front and the forest right behind. Local craftsmen from the nearby villages built them in Papuan style, from local materials, among the existing trees, which keep them shaded during the day. The resort runs largely on solar power and heats its water with the sun.

There is no fixed arrival day and no minimum stay, so you can fit the dates around your flights. Book a package with 2 or 3 dives a day, or come without diving. The house reef, the kayaks and the beach are there either way.

Cottages

Every cottage has a private bathroom with solar-heated water and a terrace with two sofas, a hammock and a pergola. Inside are a desk, a fan, a mosquito net and a water dispenser. Electricity runs 24 hours a day, partly from the resort’s own solar panels. All cottages except the Raja Ampat Garden View ones also have their own sun loungers.

Deluxe Cottage

The five Deluxe Cottages are the largest standalone cottages, at 55 m², and sit right on the beachfront. They take up to 4 adults. Glass doors open onto the sea, and inside there are two sofas, a coffee table and a workspace. The semi-open bathroom has wood details and hot water. Step off the terrace and you are on the sand, with your own sun loungers and a shaded pergola.

Deluxe Cottage Suite

The two Deluxe Cottage Suites take up to 5 adults. Each is a Deluxe Cottage plus an adjoining room of 14 m² behind a door that closes. The main cottage has a queen-size bed and the bathroom. The second room takes a queen-size bed or twin beds, which suits a family or two friends. The suites stand in a quieter, wooded part of the resort, still close to the beach.

Superior Cottage

The four Superior Cottages are the smallest beachfront cottages, at 46 m², for up to 3 adults. Each has a balcony with two sofas, a hammock, sun loungers and a pergola, and glass doors onto the garden. Two stand in the middle of the resort. The other two, near the restaurant, connect through their bathrooms, which works well for a family or friends travelling together.

Raja Ampat Garden View Cottage

The Garden View Cottages sit a few metres behind the beachfront row, in the tropical garden. At 52 m² they take up to 4 adults and are the best value at the resort. Glass doors look out over the garden to the sea, and the balcony has two sofas, a hammock and a pergola. These cottages have no sun loungers. The bathroom is open-air.

Diving

The resort is an SSI dive centre and also runs PADI courses. Boats leave at 08:00 for two dives and come back around 13:00. An afternoon boat dive leaves at 15:30, and a night dive, by boat or on the house reef, at 18:30. Groups are small.

  • Dive packages: 2 dives a day (two morning boat dives) or 3 dives a day (adds an afternoon dive and unguided house reef dives, as many as you like). Packages cover sites within 15 km of the resort, tanks, weights, the guide and the morning snack. The 3-dive package is for the whole stay. There is no diving on arrival and departure days.
  • House reef: a few steps from the cottages, for snorkeling at any time. Unguided house reef dives are for advanced divers.
  • Mantas: the resort sees them at Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge from October to April. Manta Sandy is a cleaning station that suits all levels. Manta Ridge is a reef-hook dive in current for more experienced divers.
  • Courses: Try Scuba on the house reef, Open Water, Advanced and Rescue, with SSI or PADI.

Excursions and activities

  • Fam Islands (Piaynemo): a full day out to the karst islands and the viewpoint. On the way you dive or snorkel twice, first at Melissa’s Garden, about 1.5 hours from the resort. Minimum 4 people.
  • Manta trip: half or full day at Manta Sandy or Manta Ridge, with a stop at Arborek and a dive or snorkel at Sawandarek Jetty, known for its large turtles. Minimum 4 people.
  • The Passage and Kabui Bay: an afternoon boat trip through the narrow channel between Gam and Waigeo, among karst cliffs and mangroves, back at sunset. Minimum 4 people.
  • Birds of paradise: walks in the forest with local guides, early morning or late afternoon, to look for the Red Bird of Paradise and Wilson’s Bird of Paradise. Sightings depend on patience and luck. The guide is paid in cash.
  • Snorkeling and kayaking: snorkelers can join the morning dive boat. Kayaks are free for guests, for the beaches and mangroves near the resort.
  • Castaway afternoon and romantic dinner: a private set-up on a quiet beach, or a candlelit table on the dock.

Restaurant, bar and spa

Three meals a day are included, cooked with local produce: Indonesian food with a Western touch. Dinner is shared, which is how many guests get to know each other. The bar is on the beach, and there is a small spa for massages.

Getting there

Fly to Sorong. From there the resort takes you by public ferry with VIP tickets and a porter for your bags. The return transfer is included for stays of 2 nights or more. One-night stays do not include it.

Giving back

The resort funds university scholarships for local students and set up a community library. It runs regular medical check-ups for children and adults in the four neighbouring villages, Yenbeser, Friwen, Saporkren and Wauyai. It has also given food to all four every Christmas since 2013.
