The diving
Two regions in one trip. Five days in the Banda Sea: a full day at Suanggi for a chance of schooling hammerheads, then the sea snakes and vents of Manuk and the reefs of Pulau Hatta. After the crossing, the soft corals of Misool, Piaynemo and the manta cleaning stations of the Dampier Strait. Hammerheads and mantas are a chance, not a promise.
Conditions
Late October and November are a good window for both the Banda Sea and Raja Ampat. Water 27 to 30C, visibility 15 to 30 metres, often more in the Banda Sea.
Pearl Fleet asks for Advanced Open Water and at least 50 logged dives. Expect currents, so Nitrox certification and some current experience help.
Day by day
- Day 1. Board in Ambon in the afternoon, safety briefing, then a check dive in Laha Bay, Ambon’s muck diving site, for critters like the Ambon scorpionfish. 1 dive.
- Day 2. Suanggi, a submerged volcano: a full day looking for schooling hammerheads, eagle rays and dogtooth tuna. 3 dives.
- Day 3. Manuk Island, an active volcano: vents on the seafloor, banded sea snakes and soft coral slopes. 3 to 4 dives.
- Day 4. Pulau Hatta: healthy reefs, walls and reef sharks. 3 to 4 dives.
