The diving

Pygmy seahorses at one end and oceanic mantas at the other, walls, pinnacles, ridges, caves and lagoons, and the schooling fish the region is known for: fusiliers thick enough to bring in tuna and trevally, barracuda, batfish, sweetlips, bumphead parrotfish. Reef sharks on most sites and wobbegongs lying under the coral. Walking sharks come out on night dives. Mantas are seen on three of the sites on this route, most of the year, though nobody can promise a wild animal on a given week.

Misool in the south is rock, ridges and soft coral, huge gorgonians and the wide-angle diving the region is famous for, with macro on the same sites. Fam and Penemu in the middle for Melissa’s Garden and My Reef, known for its barracuda and wobbegongs. Wayag in the north, the limestone islets from the photographs, explored by dinghy and kayak. Kawe for the fish and regular manta encounters, then the Dampier Strait around Kri.

Ashore: the ranger station at Misool with its shark nursery in a metre of clear water, the walk to the heart-shaped lagoon, dinghy trips into hidden lagoons and a cave at Farondi, village visits in the Dampier Strait, and an early walk into the forest to a bird of paradise display tree.

Conditions

Water 28 to 30 C all year. Visibility is the one thing Raja Ampat is not famous for: the water is thick with life, so 10 to 20 metres is normal and it changes dive to dive. Currents are consistent and they are the reason the fish are there; the guides check them before every dive. Showers happen even in the dry season. Two overnight crossings, otherwise the boat moves between dives.
