The diving

The boat leaves Ambon for a hammerhead site, then Koon and its manta site. Four days in Triton Bay follow, where whale sharks gather under the fishing platforms. Fafan Island comes next, and the last dives are in Misool, in the south of Raja Ampat, with a visit to Heart Lake. A waterfall visit may be added if time allows.

Hammerheads, mantas and whale sharks are wild animals and none of them is a certainty.

Conditions

Water runs 28 to 30C. Triton Bay is rich in plankton, so expect 10 to 15 metres of visibility there, and clearer water in Misool. The operator asks for Advanced Open Water and at least 50 logged dives.

Day by day

  • Day 1. Board in Ambon. The boat leaves around 10:30.
  • Day 2. Hammerhead site. Hammerheads are never a certainty.
  • Days 3 and 4. Koon, including its manta site.
  • Days 5 to 8. Triton Bay, with a chance to swim with whale sharks.
  • Days 9 and 10. Fafan Island.
  • Day 11. Misool, in southern Raja Ampat, with a visit to Heart Lake.
  • Day 12. Disembark in Sorong.
