Ocean Earth Travels

La Nissa

La Nissa is a wooden phinisi running three-day Komodo trips from Labuan Bajo, with six private cabins and no cabins below the waterline.

Every cabin is on the main or upper deck, which is unusual at this price and is the reason to pick her: no lower deck means natural light and a window in each room rather than a porthole and a hum. The two Master Cabins upstairs are 13 square metres and open onto their own balcony, with a bathtub and hot water. The four Private Cabins on the main deck are 9 square metres, each with a sea view and its own bathroom.

Five of the six take a third guest on an extra bed, so the boat sleeps twelve comfortably and seventeen at a push. Six crew including the captain, one dinghy, and canoes on board.

All meals, snorkelling gear, hotel transfers, a guide and a photographer are included, along with the trip photos afterwards. Komodo National Park fees are charged separately. La Nissa carries no tanks or compressor, so this is a cruising and snorkelling trip rather than a dive liveaboard.

Departures run Monday and Friday, with hotel pick-up between 07:30 and 08:00 and a return to Labuan Bajo around midday on day three. She can also be chartered privately for one to seven nights.

Itineraries

Itineraries aboard La Nissa liveaboard

Embark: Labuan Bajo · Disembark: Labuan Bajo

Day 1 | Siaba, Manta Point, Taka Makassar, Padar

Hotel pickup between 07.30 and 08.00, then out to Siaba to swim over the coral. On to Manta Point, where reef mantas come in to feed on the current. April to November is the window, best from June to September, and even then they are wild animals. Taka Makassar next, a curve of sand that appears and disappears with the tide, then Padar for the climb at sunset. Lunch and dinner on board.

Day 2 | Komodo Village, Pink Beach, Pempe, Kalong

Komodo village in the morning, where rangers lead the walk to find dragons in their own territory. Then Pink Beach, whose colour comes from red coral fragments in the sand, and Pempe for the afternoon. The day ends off Kalong: at dusk thousands of flying foxes lift off the mangroves and cross the channel overhead. Breakfast, lunch and dinner on board.

Day 3 | Manjarite, Kelor, back to Labuan Bajo

An early snorkel at Manjarite, then Kelor and its short steep climb for the last view of the islands, before turning back for Labuan Bajo and arriving around 12.00. Breakfast on board.
