5 Days Adventure in Java: Yogyakarta, Mount Bromo & Kawah Ijen

A road trip across Java. It starts with Borobudur and Prambanan in Yogyakarta, then heads east to the Bromo and Ijen volcanoes, for sunrise over the caldera and the blue fire at Ijen.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Yogyakarta

• A driver meets you at Yogyakarta airport and takes you to your accommodation. The drive is 2 to 2.5 hours, through the streets of Yogyakarta and out into the countryside. The rest of the day is free.

Day 2: Yogyakarta City Tour – Prambanan and Borobodur 

• After breakfast, a full day out, starting with Borobudur Temple. It is the largest Buddhist temple in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Then into central Yogyakarta for the Keraton, the Sultan’s Palace, a large complex still central to Javanese royal life. Next the Water Castle inside the Taman Sari complex, with its chambers, bathing pools and gardens.
• Afterwards, Malioboro Street, the main shopping and entertainment strip in Yogyakarta, with markets and food stalls along it.
• The day ends at Prambanan Temple, a Hindu complex dedicated to the Trimurti, with tall spires and carved reliefs running around the base.

Note: Please note that Borobudur Temple, Prambanan Temple, and Keraton Yogyakarta are closed on Monday. Plan your itinerary accordingly.

Day 3: Yogyakarta – Bromo (By Train) 

• On your final day in Yogyakarta, savor a leisurely breakfast at your hotel. The driver will pick you up from the hotel and you will continue the journey to Jombang / Mojokerta by train. Then by private car you will go to your hotel located on the slopes of the Bromo volcano. In total, it will be about 8 hours of travel. Check-in at the hotel for a well deserved rest.

Day 4: Mount Bromo Tour

• An early start for first light over Mount Bromo. The guide picks you up at the hotel by Jeep and drives to the slopes of the volcano. You climb to a viewpoint in the dark, then watch the sun come up over the caldera and the Bromo and Semeru park beyond. Back to the hotel to clean up and have breakfast, then on to Ijen, a 7 to 8 hour drive with a stop to eat.

Day 5: Trekking Ijen – Transfer to Bali

• Wake up to another day of adventure! Today, we’ll explore the enchanting Ijen Crater. Get ready for a jaw-dropping sight as we witness the mesmerizing blue fire and soak in the beauty of the sunrise. For this climb, you can choose between two schedules. Leave early to see the blue fire (leave the hotel around 1.30 am) or leave more calmly only for sunrise (around 4 am). Please decide one day before and let the guide know. Once we pick you up from your hotel, you will head towards the village of Licin to get to the side of the volcano to start the upward slope to the crater. During this trekking, your guide will give you double filter masks to protect you from natural sulfur chemicals. Enjoy the sunrise at an altitude of 2883 meters. You will see the local workers, what is said to be one of the hardest jobs in the world. These miners go down to the crater to load 80 to 100 kilos of sulfur on their shoulders and then sell it. After enjoying the sunrise, we’ll go to the hotel and have breakfast. Continue the trip to Bali by car and ferry. It will take about 4-5 hours to drive, depending on where your hotel is.
