The Open Water course is the first step towards becoming a certified diver. To make the most of this experience, you’ll need a proper preparation and a positive mindset. That’s why we decided to share with you our five essential tips to ensure your Open Water course is a success. From choosing the right dive center to embracing the learning experience, let’s dive in!

Tip 1: Choose The Right Dive Center

To set yourself up for success, be sure to choose the right dive center. Look for centers with recognized certifications, experienced instructors, and positive reviews. By selecting a trusted dive center, you’ll be sure to receive top-quality training and guidance throughout your course. At Ocean Earth Travels, we have carefully selected the best dive centers that work with experienced instructors who prioritize safety and provide personalized attention. The two main recreational diving agencies are PADI and SSI. They both follow the same standards for recreational diving and they provide certifications recognized worldwide. For your open water course, don’t choose a certification agency, but choose the right dive center and instructor!

Tip 2: Prepare Yourself Physically & Mentally

Before starting your Open Water course, you must be prepared physically and mentally. Indeed, scuba diving requires a certain level of fitness. Engage with activities like swimming or snorkeling to improve your stamina and water skills. Additionally, familiarize yourself with basic scuba diving principles and terminology. By being mentally prepared, you’ll feel more confident and comfortable during the course. Most importantly, make sure you are in good health before your course. Get a medical check-up if necessary! Some conditions might require approval from your physician. You can check out the recreational diving medical questionnaire here. If you are able to answer no to all of the questions from the questionnaire, you are good to go! This questionnaire is the same for all the recognized certification agencies and you will be required to fill it up before starting your course.

Tip 3: Get Familiar with the Open Water Course Components

Understanding the components of an Open Water course is key to success. Firstly, you’ll do theory sessions to learn dive principles. You will learn about the effects of the aquatic environment on your body, how to use scuba diving equipment properly, the effects of breathing gas on your body, the importance of having a dive buddy, and how to execute safe and enjoyable dives. Secondly, you’ll train to practice essential skills in a pool or confined water location. Last but not least, you’ll do at least 4 Open Water dives to apply what you’ve learned in a real-world setting.

Most agencies now offer online learning options. You will be able to read about the principle of diving before even arriving at the diving center. A great way to pass the time during your travel, and you will have more time during the actual course to ask questions to your instructor.
