12 Days Sulawesi Tour: Toraja and Togian Islands

A 12-day, 11-night itinerary across Sulawesi, through the highland cultures of Toraja, past lakes and forest, ending with four days in the remote Togian Islands.

Itinerary

Day 1: Palopo – Rantepao

Arrive at Palopo airport and transfer to Toraja. Visit the buffalo, pig and livestock market, one of the more striking things to see in the region. After lunch, the megalithic stones at Bori and the traditional Toraja village of Palawa. Continue to Batutumonga, high up with views over the valley, for dinner and the night.

Day 2: Trekking Adventure in Toraja

Begin the day with a trek from Batutumonga through scenic landscapes, including Lokkomata’s famous burial sites, bamboo forests, rice fields, and traditional villages such as Kata, Sumpia’, Tiroan, and Sereale. Return to the hotel by car and enjoy a restful evening. Overnight at Torsina or Indra Hotel.

Day 3: The Burial Sites of Toraja

A day visiting the Toraja burial cliffs at Lemo, the hanging graves at Suaya and Sirope, the cave graves of Tampangallo, and sites at Tumbangdatu and Karuaya. Also the baby grave in a tree at Pote, where infants were buried inside living trunks. Back to the same hotel for the night.

Day 4: Toraja – Tentena

Rantepao to Tentena takes about 11 hours, with a stop for lunch. It is a long drive, though the landscape changes constantly. Overnight in Tentena.

Day 5: Tentena – Salu Opa Waterfall – Ampana

Start with Salu Opa Waterfall, then on to Ampana, about six hours by car along the coast. Overnight in Ampana.

Day 6: Ampana – Wakai – Togian

Take the boat from Ampana to Wakai, then on to Kadidiri Paradise in the Togian Islands.

Day 7-10: Exploring the Togian Islands(Diving or Snorkeling)

Four days in the Togian Islands, an archipelago of 56 islands in Tomini Bay, covered in tropical forest and ringed with coral reef. The water averages 32°C with visibility up to 50 meters.

The islands hold 37 villages, home to the Babongko, Togian and Saluan peoples, and to the Bajau, who live on the water. You can visit the villages, snorkel with stingless jellyfish, and take boat trips between the islands.

Day 11: Togian – Wakai – Ampana – Palu/Luwuk

After breakfast, take a boat from the hotel to Wakai, then transfer by public speedboat to Ampana or by ferry to Gorontalo. Continue by private transport to Palu or Luwuk for an overnight stay.

Note: For Gorontali, ferry departs from (Togian) Wakai every Monday and Thursday.

Day 12: Departure

Transfer to the airport, end of Tour.
