April 1st. The monsoon breaks. The wind shifts. The water starts to settle. If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to visit Komodo, this is it. April marks the beginning of diving season: April through November is when conditions are reliable and boats run. But April and May are a bit special. The islands are still green from the wet season. From June, everything dries out.
We’ve guided divers to Komodo every month. July, August and September bring peak crowds and stronger currents (good if you’re advanced). But April, May and June give you all the good stuff: manta rays, clear water, manageable currents, without the summer madness.
Water Clarity Improves Fast
- Late March: 12 to 18m (murky)
- Early April: 15 to 22m (clearing)
- Mid-April: 20 to 28m (much better)
- Late April: 25 to 35m (excellent)
You’re not waiting for perfect conditions. You’re watching them arrive week by week.
Currents Are Manageable
April runs 0.5–1.5 knots in the main channels. Strong enough to keep marine life active. Gentle enough that intermediate divers don’t struggle. By July, you’re looking at 1.5–2.5+ knots, thrilling for advanced divers, exhausting for everyone else.
The Islands Are Still Green
From June onward, the landscape dries completely. Brown, sparse, rocky. Beautiful, but exposed. April and May are the only months when you dive and the islands look alive.

April vs. Other Months
April vs. May–June
Both excellent. May has slightly better visibility. But April has fewer divers, lower prices, and the landscape is still green. If you can’t wait until May, go in April.
April vs. July–September (Peak Season)
More diverse. Fuller boats. Stronger currents. Higher prices, more crowded, hardest to book, premium pricing. Peak season is peak for a reason.
April vs. October–November
Still excellent. However, you’re at the tail end of the season. Islands are completely dry. Weather approaching monsoon in November.
vs. Wet Season (Dec–March)
Possible to dive, but visibility is hit-or-miss (3 to 15m). Currents are unpredictable. Some sites close. A different Komodo experience.
