The diving
Four days in Misool for soft corals, sea fans and pygmy seahorses, then north to the black sand of Batanta, Kawe and Aljui Bay, and the manta cleaning stations of the Dampier Strait to finish.
Conditions
January is inside the calm window for Raja Ampat. Water 28 to 30C, visibility 15 to 30 metres.
Day by day
- Day 1. Board Mermaid I in Sorong as your flight allows, unpack and set up your gear. After the boat and safety briefing she cruises overnight to Misool, about 90 nautical miles.
- Day 2-5. Misool, the southern island of Raja Ampat: soft coral walls, gorgonian fans with pygmy seahorses, and pinnacles with schooling fish, at Sagof, Wagmab, Farondi, Boo, Fiabacet and Pele among others. A dinghy trip around the Farondi or Sagof lagoons after the third dive of one day. 15 dives.
- Day 6-8. North through Batanta for black sand critters, Kawe for schooling fish and a chance of mantas, Aljui Bay with its pearl farm and a jetty night dive for walking sharks and wobbegongs, Yanggefo’s mangroves, the Arborek and Sawandarek jetties, and the manta cleaning stations of the Dampier Strait. 12 dives.
- Day 9. Two last dives in the Dampier Strait, then the 5 to 6 hour run back to Sorong while the crew rinses your gear. 2 dives.
- Day 10. Transfer to Sorong airport after breakfast.

The Boat
Relax in style aboard Mermaid I spacious cabins. The boat can accommodate up to 15 guests. Choose from a range of options, including the Master Cabin with a king-size bed, cozy Single Cabin, Deluxe Cabins (king size or twin beds), and Lower Deck Cabins (double/twin beds).

All cabins boast ensuite bathrooms, panoramic sea views, modern amenities, air conditioning, iPads for entertainment, toiletries, and towels.
The dive setup includes two exit ladders, freshwater showers and camera rinse tanks. NITROX is available.
Meals are Asian and Western, served in the Sawasdee Restaurant with ocean views. There are 2 outside decks and a sundeck with cushioned sun beds, plus a saloon with a multimedia system and a reading library.
2026 refit
- New main engines and generators. The work started in June 2026 and finished in early September.
- Individual air conditioning in the lower deck cabins. Fitting it removed the old duct, which is the part that matters: the ceiling is higher and there is more room over the single bunk. The rest of the main deck and the saloon follow in June 2027.
- Sundeck lounge. Back support cushions added, alongside the twelve sunbeds.
- Party deck rebuilt, with a new barbecue and rattan ceilings.
