Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, located in East Flores, erupted on June 17, 2025, releasing a massive column of grey volcanic ash up to 10 kilometers into the sky. Thanks to early warnings and expert monitoring, no injuries or fatalities were reported, and evacuations were carried out smoothly and on time.

Where Is Mount Lewotobi?

Mount Lewotobi is located in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, near the coastal town of Larantuka. It’s made up of two volcanic cones: Lewotobi Laki-Laki (the currently active “male” volcano) and Lewotobi Perempuan (“female” volcano), just 2 km apart.

The volcano lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent volcanic and seismic activity. This area is remote but home to small communities, traditional villages, and dramatic highland landscapes.

What Led to the Eruption

Lewotobi didn’t erupt without warning. In fact, volcanologists detected a dramatic spike in volcanic activity the day before:

  • Over 50 deep volcanic earthquakes recorded in just a few hours.
  • Tremors showing magma rising closer to the surface.
  • Tiltmeter and GPS readings confirming the volcano was inflating from within.

As a result, Indonesia’s Geological Agency raised the alert level to Level IV (AWAS) by midday on June 17. Local communities and travelers were advised to keep a 7–8 km distance from the crater, and preparations for evacuation were launched before the eruption even began.

Travel with Confidence

Indonesia is a land shaped by volcanoes – and it’s also home to one of the most advanced volcanic monitoring systems in the world. This eruption is a powerful example of how science, preparation, and calm leadership work together.
